YOUR TOP 5 LIST OF ABSOLUTELY-MUST-DO IN ICELAND
ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL ADVENTURE OF YOUR LIFETIME
Julie – “Summer is coming! Where do we go?”
Renaud – “I really want to leave the crowd of Spain, France and Italy in summer, I want to discover magnificent and endless landscapes in Europe, with no one around, just you and me, our tent and our big boots.
What do you think about Iceland?”
Julie – “Is that the good season to go there? Yes? Let’s do it then!”
That’s how you decide to make one of the most wonderful adventure of a lifetime… And it’s as simple as that: a road trip in Iceland.
If you need as much as we do to travel close to the nature, in peace and to be amazed at what you see, this is exactly the perfect destination to choose. You’ll be popeyed on every single step you’ll set in this country, you can trust me.
Convinced? Right! Here’s your top 5 list of absolutely-must-do in the “Country of Ice and Fire”.
First, let’s make you dream a little bit…
Kerlingarfjöll is my favorite attraction in Iceland. It’s maybe because it means « The Woman’s Mountains ». Seriously, look at the photo, it’s crazy what you will feel when being there discovering this grandiose spot with sweet contrasted orange colors and seeing volcanic activities with smoke everywhere. You’ll find something so different from what we usually visit. All your senses will be awaked…
Now, in practice!
You can access this place thanks to the road F347 and before the road F35. It’s a dirt road, but with so beautiful landscapes around, you can do it especially with a reliable Suzuki Jimmy.
Show me your envy!
Landmannalaugar means litteraly “Hot Springs of Landmanna” where you actually can bath with other guests after exploring the area. Do it, you’ll feel so relaxed… The geologic surroundings are right out breathtaking, multicolored mountains in pink, green, yellow, brown, purple, white and black and widespread lava fields. I would like my garden to look like this spot.
How to get there?
This amazing green place is accessible thanks to a chaotic dirt road only from mid-June to mid-September. The easiest route to Landmannalaugar is to take either Road 30 from the main road and change into Road 32, cross the Sultartangi hydro-electric dam, going onto F26, then F208 and just before arriving in Landmannalaugar, making a right turn to F224.
- JÖKULSARLON GLACIER LAGOON
Marvel a little bit…
On arrival at Jökulsárlon, there is only one thing to do: ADMIRE Iceland’s spectacular natural beauty. You will enjoy panoramic views over the Vatnajokull glacier — the largest in Europe — and watch seals playing among the frozen icebergs floating in the glacial lake.
- SOLHEIMASANDUR PLANE CRASH
A dramatic airplane wreckage…
It’s one of Iceland’s most dreaming — or dramatic as you prefer — photography locations. In 1973 a United States Navy Douglas Super DC-3 airplane was forced to land on Sólheimasandur’s desolate black sand beach. Luckily all crew members survived, but the airplane was abandoned leaving an amazing spot for passionate photographers like you and me.
The question is “How to find this famous plane”?
It is located on Iceland’s South coast between Skógafoss waterfall and Vik. After driving past Skógafoss going East on Route 1, you’ll cross a bridge with yellow lights and a dirt road to Sólheimajökull Glacier on your left. Keep driving East for 2 kilometers and look for another dirt road turnoff with a gate on your right. Yes, you found it!
If you want to see it, then walk!
Local landowners have banned access to vehicles driving on the beach. So now you have to walk 4km to the plane from the road and come back walking again 4km on a desolate road with nothing really interesting to see. Be brave, it worth a visit!
- BLUE LAGOON
Iceland’s Disney World
Blue Lagoon is based upon an amazing gift of nature: Iceland’s unique source of geothermal seawater. You approach Blue Lagoon along a 200-metre footpath cut through lava rock. Inside, an incredible lava wall connects the building to the natural rocks surrounding the bathing lagoon.
Its particularity is the creation of an artificial lake of more than 200 meters long in a volcanic zone, in the middle of lava fields supplied by water from Svartsengi Geothermal Power Central. Its milky turquoise water is good for your skin. Carved into the lava rock, a sauna and steam baths are a big part of the Blue Lagoon experience. Waterfalls, relaxation area, you can even drink something on the lagoon… everything is made to enjoy life.
If you have time, you should also visit Dettifoss, Háifoss, Thingvellir, Gullfoss and Skógafoss illustrated below…
Well, now, your top 5 list of absolutely-must-do in Iceland is actually a top 10 list… Sorry I couldn’t resist to lengthen the list 😉
